I have a special interest in how our earliest pre-verbal, or even pre-birth experience shapes our adult relationships and emotional responses. This may have produced background traumatic anxiety, or symptoms of embodied shock.
My experience in this has given me confidence that we can release unconscious process with a combination of working with a Mindfulness based approach, of awareness of how we feel and respond in the present, and recognition of early relational conditioning. In this way we bring embodied awareness to how we hold and express the trauma, which allows us to move the shock out of our nervous system and change how we respond in the present.
My own life experience has given me a deep sense of compassion for others who struggle not only with their trauma, but the additional difficulties when this is not seen and acknowledged by those around them. This can feel very lonely, and without the recognition and support of family and friends we can be vulnerable to despair and feelings of unworthiness. These early experiences leave an unconscious memory, while at the same time the effect becomes very familiar – so you might think that it is your own fault, or just something about who you are, and find it hard to imagine how it can change.
How Does Change Happen?
Acknowledging your pain is the first brave step towards healing it. In therapy I encourage you to appreciate and develop your inner resource and resilience alongside exploring how you feel – so that we hold both the suffering and your capacity to bear it.
We can’t erase what has already happened, but we can work together to help you find a different place in relation to your emotional wounding, so that it has less impact. As you develop awareness in the here and now, so you can use therapy to support an increased capacity to ‘witness’ your habitual patterns and reactions.
I work on the premise of inherent health – we are striving towards our potential, and we have a choice to identify with this potential rather than our negative patterning. I believe that we do not need to remain limited by our early conditioning, so in therapy we work together to identify what obscures this sense of your health and wellbeing. Awareness becomes like seeing your authentic self rather than how you think others see you; and as you step into this relationship with yourself more energy and joy becomes available to you.
